A summary of a recent article on Becker’s Healthcare on value-based health care (VBHC), defined as “a framework for restructuring health care systems with the overarching goal of value for patients, with value defined as health outcomes per unit of costs.”[1]

Value-based care is an alternative healthcare payment model to the traditional fee-for-service system. It aims to reduce costs while delivering high-quality patient care. Here are some key points about value-based care in spine surgery:

  • Physician Control: Surgeons like Dr. Bae believe that for value-based care to succeed, physicians need to be in control of the decision-making process. This would allow them to take ownership of patient outcomes and potentially reduce healthcare system costs.
  • Private Insurance Involvement: Private insurance companies can play a significant role in supporting value-based care through bundled payment models. A study showed that private bundled payment models resulted in fewer patient readmissions compared to traditional Medicare bundled models.
  • Challenges: One major hurdle for value-based care is the lack of a universally agreed-upon definition. Different stakeholders (payers, patients, and providers) have varying interpretations of the concept, making it difficult to establish clear goals and metrics for success.
  • Future Considerations: Finding common ground on the definition and establishing reasonable goals for all parties involved are crucial for the future success of value-based care models.
