World’s First Robotic Surgery System for Shoulder Replacement

On February 22nd, Zimmer Biomet announced they had received FDA clearance for ROSA Shoulder System, the world’s first robotic surgery system for shoulder replacement. This marks the fourth application in their ROSA Robotics portfolio, following knee and hip replacements.

The system replicates humeral head resectioning without needing a central pin, uses 3D imaging for pre-operative planning, personalizing the approach for each patient, and provides real-time guidance during surgery, even avoiding extra pins in the joint. The system will be commercially available in the U.S. in the second half 2024. The shoulder replacement market is expected to reach $3.5 billion by 2029, driven by clinical success and increasing standardization of procedures.
